Clergy don’t always have enough time to do thorough marital preparation with couples. An effective antidote to this problem is the use of lay mentor couples. Under the guidance of a clergy leader, they are assigned to an engaged or married couple, administering a marriage inventory and discussing the results with the couple. Their role is not to be counselors or therapists but facilitators helping the mentored couple communicate with each other about what really matters. Training is provided in combination with PREPARE, one of the most highly respected and empirically supported marriage inventories.
